Actress, born in Cork, Co Cork, S Ireland. After studying philosophy at University College, Cork, she trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating with the Bancroft Gold Medal. Throughout her career she has worked consistently with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Productions here include As You Like It (1985), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1985), Much Ado About Nothing (1986), and The Merchant of Venice (1986). Other theatre work includes Mary Stuart (1988), Machinal (1993), and The Prime of Miss Jean Brody (1998). She often collaborates with the director Deborah Warner (earning them the nickname the Terrible Twins) most notably with Richard II (1995), in which she played the title role, which provoked both enormous criticism and rapturous praise. Film work includes My Left Foot (1988), London Kills Me (1991), Three Men and a Little Lady (1996), Butcher Boy (1996), and The Last September (1999). She is considered one of Britain's most controversial and exhilarating performers.
