
Actress, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK in 1950. She trained as a teacher at Manchester Polytechnic, and made her stage debut in Educating Rita (1980), for which she won recognition as a promising newcomer, and later a BAFTA award in the film version (1983). Later films include Killing Dad (1989), Just Like A Woman (1992), Intimate Relations (1997), Billy Elliot (2000, BAFTA, Best Supporting Actress), and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's; Stone (2001). On television she partnered Victoria Wood in the series Wood and Walters (from 1981), and also appeared in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (1985), GBH (1991), Jake's Progress (1995), and Melissa (1997). She teamed up again with Wood for Dinner Ladies (1998-2000) and appeared in Alan Bleasdale's adaptation of Oliver Twist (1999). In 2001 she returned to the London stage in All My Sons, for which she won a Best Actress Laurence Olivier Award.
