A New JKR Interview
Posted on Feb 04 2008 by PadfootReturns

Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling is the subject of an interview which ran this past weekend in a number of Spanish language publications as part of the XLSemanal section. This interview first took place a number of months ago and features Jo speaking of her inspirations for events and characters which played heavily in the Harry Potter series, a little about her past, and candidly about her husband, Dr. Neil Murray. We are still awaiting the entire interview and will provide more here when we can. In the meantime, here are some rough excerpts from the interview which appeared over the weekend:

About the relationship between September 11, 2001 and Harry Potter, Rowling denied any influence and recognizes the true inspiration for Minister Cornelius Fudge: “My model of the world after Voldemort’s return was, directly, the government of Neville Chamberlain in Great Britain during the Second World War, when he tried to minimize the menace of the Nazi regime for political convenience.”

She also spoke about her two marriages, saying: “I had decided not to marry again. In seven years I hadn’t met anyone who liked me so much. And I remember that I thought: I have a daughter who I adore, I have success, and deep down, I am happy. My sister introduced us and I thought he was a very solid person. He’s an excellent doctor in his profession, and he works in a world that is far away from mine. What I most adore about him is that, everyday, Neil knows more people that want to know if he can help them, without having to ask who he is married to.”

She didn’t avoid talking about her first husband, Jorge Arantes, who Jo was married to for nearly two years: “None of the characters of my books are based on my ex. Whatever happened in our marriage, the truth is that my ex-husband contributed fifty percent to one of the most beautiful things that has happened in my life, which is my eldest daughter. So, I’d never used him in a fairy tale. He’s her father.”

Five Day Harry Potter Conference Planned
Posted on Jan 31 2008 by PadfootReturns

CHICAGO, IL -- January 29, 2008 -- The planning team for Terminus, a five-day Harry Potter conference to be held August 7-11, 2008, has announced that the deadline for programming proposals has been extended to Sunday, February 3.

"The programming for Terminus is drawn from the proposals made to the conference," noted Hallie Tibbetts, a Lead Event Organizer. "We invite scholars, professionals, and fans to share their analyses and interests surrounding Harry Potter and the related phenomenon with our attendees. Between the release of the final book and the continued fan interest, there are still hundreds of avenues to explore in presentations, and there's nothing quite so exciting as discussing Harry Potter with over a thousand other attendees who understand the allure of the books, films, and fan community."

The conference welcomes proposals for papers (solo and pre-empaneled), panels, workshops, and roundtable discussions. In addition, there are presentation options for fanfiction readings, fan art and craft portfolios, and gallery art, and interactive booths for writing, editing, drawing, and art critique.

Terminus is presented by Narrate Conferences, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to creating dynamic, innovative educational events for adult scholars, students, educators, librarians, professionals, and fans. Narrate Conferences recently presented Phoenix Rising, a five-day Harry Potter conference in New Orleans.

Good news for Septimus Heap fans!
Posted on Jan 18 2008 by Mad-Eye

The fourth book in the Septimus Heap series, Queste, is being released on April 8, 2008. The US cover has not yet been released, but normally the covers are quite similar. This is what Amazon and other US booksellers have to say about Queste:

There's trouble at the Castle, and it's all because Merrin Meredith has returned with Darke plans for Septimus. More trouble awaits Septimus and Jenna in the form of Tertius Fume, the ghost of the very first Chief Hermetic Scribe, who is determined to send Septimus on a deadly Queste. But Septimus and Jenna have other plans--they are headed for the mysterious House of Foryx, a place where all Time meets and the place where they fervently hope they will be able to find Nicko and Snorri, who were trapped back in time in physik. But how will Septimus escape the Queste?

Queste, like all the books in the Septimus Heap series, is filled with nonstop action, humor, and fantastical adventure as Septimus continues his journey of Magykal self-discovery.

The UK description is a little more in depth:

In the fourth book, Septimus goes on a perilous quest to the House of Foryxx to find Nicko and Snorri, who have been trapped back in time. Everyone at the Castle is slowly beginning to realize that their chances of coming back are slim. Septimus, aided by ancient alchemist Marcellus Pye, learns of a place where all time meets: the House of Foryxx. But how does he get there?

Jenna and Septimus find Nicko's notes from the past and discover that he knows of the House of Foryxx as well and has been creating a map to plot the house's hidden location. With the help of the Questing Stone and Nicko's faded maps, will Septimus be able to find the House of Foryxx, and save Nicko and Snorri? Meanwhile, Simon Heap has taken on Merrin Meredith, former apprentice to DomDaniel, as his own apprentice, giving Merrin an opportunity he has been waiting years for. With the help of a frightening creature called a Thing, Merrin plans to reclaim the identity he used to have - that of Septimus Heap.

The book will be 608 pages.

In other news, we have a little good/bad going on at the same time--a new Artemis Fowl book will be released on July 15, 2008 and will be approximately 400 pages. The title is The Time Paradox. No cover art or description is yet available for this book, but author Eoin Colfer has said in his blogs that this may possibly be the last in the series, and even if he decides to go forward with this series, we won't be seeing any new volumes beyond this one for at least three years.

Fantastic news for fans of the Inheritance Cycle!
Posted on Jan 17 2008 by Mad-Eye

Kvetha Fricaya! Greetings, Friends!

I am pleased to tell you that the title of Book Three in the Inheritance cycle is Brisingr. Sometimes one's first thought is best, and so it was with naming this book. After many months of trying to sum up a complex story in a single word, it struck me that I had had the name all along. For reasons that will become clear when you read Brisingr, this title is perfect.

Brisingr is an Old Norse word for "fire". As you may remember, in Eragon, Brom uses the word brisingr to start a fire. This is the first time Eragon hears an ancient language word, a word of magic. Later, when Eragon is cornered by Urgals in Yazuac, he shouts Brisingr! to great effect (see Eragon chapters "Revelation at Yazuac" and "Admonishments").

Both elements of the cover, the gold dragon Glaedr and the title, touch on Eragon's inheritance. With his painting, John Jude Palencar has captured the dignity and wisdom of Glaedr, and Random House has again designed an awesome book cover.

More exciting news is on the horizon . . .

May your swords stay sharp!

Christopher Paolini

To see a larger version of the cover, please visit our forums here. You don't need to be registered to view the thread, but you do need to be registered to post. In addition, Random House, the publisher of the Inheritance Cycle, has announced that the release date of Brisingr will be bumped up to September 20, 2008.
